How a Picture Book Works with JESSICA SOUHAMI

Westminster Institute of Education, Harcourt Hill, Oxford, OX2 9AT
Date: Wednesday 19th October Time: 1.30-3.45pm
Cost £50, Students £15

Jessica Souhami is a teller of stories through words and pictures. Many of her picture books are retellings of folk tales from around the world – or retellings with a twist. Her stories demand to be read aloud and her bold bright illustrations, created through collage, are full of life.

In this practical hands-on workshop Jessica will share some of the secrets of making a picture book with teachers. We shall explore how all the elements in a picture book work together to create a whole, and how young readers relate to these rich reading experiences.

Based on the discussion and analysis of actual texts – many of them Jessica’s own picture books – participants in this workshop will begin to create their own story and learn how to use the picture book medium with its multiple techniques. They will develop a draft of a picture book, in the process learning more about how pictures and texts can combine to tell a powerful story.

Traditional Tales with KEVIN CROSSLEY-HOLLAND

National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature, Digby Stuart Collge, Roehampton Institute, London SW15 5PJ
Date: Tuesday 1st November Time: 5-7pm
Cost: FREE

Kevin Crossley Holland is a prize-winning writer for children, having been awarded both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction award. He is fascinated by traditional tales and the oral cultures from which they arise.

For centuries people taught their children about their history and culture through these oral stories. With their simple structures and patterned language, they held important messages about their world. More recently, they have been written down in different versions and have continued to develop as they have been shaped and reinterpreted. Stories from many cultures have become part of a widening heritage available to modern children.

This seminar for teachers, librarians and those interested in children’s literature will be an in-depth exploration of traditional stories, and will aim to spark discussion of the meanings and significance of these tales, their cultural importance, and their contribution to children’s emotional and also their moral education. The seminar will aim to bring traditional tale alive for the participants by engaging them in active exploration (discussion, argument, retelling) of individual stories and their worlds.
